Ingredients

  • 1 pound ziti pasta
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Equipment

  • large pot
  • colander
  • large skillet
  • Spoon
  • Medium bowl
  • Large bowl
  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Oven

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook the ziti pasta according to package directions, but cook it 2 minutes less than recommended for al dente. Drain well.
  3. While the pasta is cooking, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
  4. Add the onion and garlic to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  5. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, Parmesan cheese, and egg. Mix well.
  7. In a large bowl, combine the cooked pasta, meat sauce, and ricotta mixture. Stir gently to combine.
  8. Pour the pasta mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
  9. Top with the mozzarella cheese.
  10. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the casserole is heated through.
  11. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best results, use high-quality cheeses and simmer the sauce for the full 15 minutes. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To prevent a soupy ziti, ensure the pasta is al dente and allow the baked ziti to rest for 10 minutes before serving. You can substitute Italian sausage for ground beef. Add a layer of sautéed vegetables (such as bell peppers and mushrooms) to the sauce for added flavor and nutrients.
